October is Black History Month
During the month we highlight and celebrate the stories and accomplishments of prominent black people, who may have been left out or neglected throughout our history.
Why do we celebrate in October?
The concept of Black History Month originated in the US, at Kent State University, where it was first celebrated in February 1970. Within six years this initiative spread all across the country. In the UK, Black History Month was first celebrated in October 1987. It is thought that October was chosen as traditionally that is when African chiefs and leaders gather to settle their differences.
